My paintings portray people in everyday activities dressed in outfits far from the realm of ordinary life. This series began with observations of people at the anime (Japanese animation) conventions I frequented. I love watching con-goers in elaborate fantasy costumes eating at McDonald's or lounging on the floor. While they may be dressed as over-the-top villains, nobles, or cuddly characters, they typically do not act the part. My paintings explore the contrast, tension, and congruity between the mundane and the fantastic.

Along with Japanese culture, I am inspired by Victorian fashion, Old Masters paintings, historical decoration and pattern, and pop culture. I’m also intensely interested in portraiture, and find my current series affords me ample opportunity to explore all of the above.
