Anime is a style of Japanese film and television animation that has recently grown popular internationally after the ascension of English dubs. Anime was created because Japanese studios did not have the budget for smooth animation like Disney and other big animation companies. Rather than focusing on movement, anime production uses realistic backgrounds and intense camera angles to draw their audience. Japanese studios also created a signature character style that helped jumpstart the market. Anime characters typically have exaggerated proportions, large sparkly eyes and brightly colored hair, though there is still wide variation within the aesthetic.
Manga are Japanese comics. Almost all anime shows are manga adaptations.
